Former Vol could have an opportunity to win an NFL starting job in 2024

Former Tennessee Vols running back Eric Gray could have a massive opportunity this summer to win an NFL starting job. 

Gray, who started his college career at Tennessee before transferring to Oklahoma, was a fifth round selection by the New York Giants in the 2023 NFL Draft. 

The former Vol didn't see much action -- outside of special teams -- in 2023, carrying the ball just 17 times for 48 yards. 

Gray, however, should have an opportunity this summer to earn some serious playing time with the Giants in 2024. That's because Devin Singletary, who will turn 27 in early September, is the only other legitimate starting option on New York's roster. 

"With no other proven running back on the roster other than Devin Singletary, Gray could have a chance to earn a large share of backfield work once the season starts," noted Giants.com's John Schmeelk recently. "He is a good receiver and elusive with the ball in his hands."

Gray was dynamic at times for the Vols, rushing for 772 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore in 2020 (he also caught 34 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns in 2020). 

The Memphis native was even more productive for Oklahoma, rushing for 1,366 yards and 11 touchdowns while catching 33 passes for 229 yards in 2022. 

Running backs like Gray (who aren't drafted high) don't get many opportunities to win starting jobs in the NFL. Gray needs to make the most of his chances this summer -- it might be the best opportunity he ever receives in the NFL.
