There’s nowhere like the North Shore to test and refine surfboard designs. Since Mike Hynson, Gerry Lopez and Dick Brewer first started experimenting with the downrailer at the end of the ‘60s it’s been a constant evolutionary march forward. In keeping with that tradition, this winter Britt Merrick and the crew at Channel Islands Surfboards posted up on the Seven Mile Miracle to put the screws to their latest designs.

After rounds of training, research and development, straight out of the gates the hard work was rewarded with Barron Mamiya's statement-making win at the Pipe Pro. From the opening round to his 10-point ride in the final, the North Shore native was not to be denied—and factoring into the win was the board under Mamiya's feet.

“I just wanted to see the boards perform on that level, and to feel that sense of accomplishment, it was special in that I made that one-off board for Barron and that ended up being the one that he won on,” describes Merrick in the newest YouTube drop from Channel Islands. “We’re now calling that one ‘Goldy,’ and he said that it’s the best board he’s ever had at Pipe, and there’s not a lot of people who have ridden more boards at Pipeline than Barron Mamiya.”

But Mamiya is not the only star of the new edit. The cast of characters includes Imaikalani deVault, Parker Coffin, Lakey Peterson, Matt McGillivray, Alyssa Spencer, Cam Richards, Ewe Wong and Mason Barnes. Collectively, the team going through the details of the CI Pro Step-up, the Pro Step-up, the Happy Traveler, and even a new Maverick’s prototype.

And for the Gen X gang out there that grew up on “Thicker Than Water,” Merrick shares a story you’re not going to want to miss.
